Roy and Maggie have been life long fine artists.
They joke that their relationship as husband and wife and Fine artists only exists harmoniously because they paint in different centuries. Roy’s love for northern renaissance painting has led him to a career of painting still life, landscapes and portraits in the tradition of Old Dutch masters. Maggie embraced the late 19th century through the 20th century. Her work goes from figurative expressionist forms to the abstract expressionism of the New York School.
Having sailed from Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada, they arrived in Charleston, South Carolina seven years ago on a wooden gaff rigged, pinkeye sloop hoping to start anew in a warmer climate. Maggie went to various designers with their painting portfolios, looking for painting commissions. When asked if they would do murals and embellish homes with various wall finishes Schmidt-Mandell Studio was born.
From painting commissions to faux finishes, to furniture embellishments, Working with interior designers, builders and architects the Mandells have enhanced more houses than they can count. They have added to their repertoire a show place for their work called Vernissage. They are partners in these endeavors with their daughter Kellianne Land, in her own right a talented artist and designer.
The focus of their work, whether on canvas or a living room wall, is to maintain the quality and integrity of their fine art and art historical background. |

| "Slowly I discovered the secret of my art. It consists of a meditation on nature, on the expression of a dream which is always inspired by reality." |
